Dental discomfort during X-rays is a universal complaint, yet it’s often overlooked in healthcare innovation. Studies estimate that 30% of patients experience moderate to severe dental anxiety, with uncomfortable procedures like X-rays being significant contributors (British Dental Journal, 2023).

Meanwhile, the global dental equipment market is projected to grow from $7.38 billion in 2024 to $12.62 billion by 2032 (Market Research Future, 2024), underscoring the urgent need for patient-centric innovations.

Enter Tiago Moreira, a Malmö-based dentistry student with roots in Portugal, whose invention is set to revolutionize dental X-rays. His eco-friendly, ergonomic X-ray sensor holder doesn’t just reduce discomfort; it reimagines the experience for both patients and professionals.

Tiago Moreira is no ordinary dentistry student. As a Future Makers award winner from Malmö University and a recipient of the Sten K Johnsons Foundation Scholarship, Tiago’s entrepreneurial spirit stands out.

A Journey of Innovation

His journey began when a mentor at university issued a simple challenge: “Create something meaningful.”

Tiago took the advice to heart and leveraged his background in dentistry to address a common issue.

“Every week, at least one in five patients mentions how uncomfortable X-rays are,” he explains. The result? A sensor holder designed to be ergonomic, sustainable, and patient-safe.

“My motto is ‘To dare is to do,’” Tiago shares. “It’s not just about identifying problems but having the courage to create solutions.”

Dental X-rays are indispensable for diagnostics, with over 1 billion X-rays performed annually worldwide (World Health Organization, 2023). However, existing equipment often causes pain due to sharp edges and bulky designs, triggering gag reflexes and stress in already anxious patients.

How Tiago’s Device Transforms X-Ray Comfort

His device addresses these issues by:

  • Ergonomic Design: Shaped for comfort to reduce gag reflex triggers.

  • Eco-Friendly Materials: Incorporating sustainable elements to minimize waste.

  • Safety Enhancements: Ensuring accurate diagnostics without compromising patient comfort.

“The feedback from patients and dentists alike has been overwhelmingly positive,” Tiago says.

Recognized in the Nordic Innovation Ecosystem

Tiago’s innovation has gained traction within the Nordic entrepreneurial ecosystem, known for fostering human-centered design and sustainability. His key achievements include:

  • Future Makers Award (Malmö University): Recognizing transformative student innovations.

  • Sten K Johnsons Foundation Scholarship: A grant supporting entrepreneurial projects with societal impact.

  • Top 20 Ideas (Venture Cup, Southern Region): Highlighting the most promising business concepts in southern Sweden.

These accolades aren’t just trophies; they represent the growing validation of Tiago’s work and its potential to transform dentistry.

Sweden consistently ranks among the top five most innovative countries globally, according to the Global Innovation Index 2023. This culture of innovation, combined with Malmö University’s robust entrepreneurial support, played a crucial role in Tiago’s journey.

A Unique Approach to Problem-Solving

What sets Tiago apart is his meticulous approach to problem-solving. His 120-page personal roadmap is a testament to his planning skills. This document, which breaks down tasks into daily, weekly, and yearly goals, keeps him accountable and focused.

“Scheduling isn’t just a tool; it’s a mindset,” Tiago says. “If something is on my calendar, it gets done—no excuses.”

Networking has also been a cornerstone of his success. “Finding the right people at the right time has been both my biggest challenge and my greatest reward,” he adds.

What’s Next for Tiago and His Innovation?

Tiago’s immediate goal is to finalize a functional prototype by summer, staying true to his carefully crafted timeline. Long-term, he envisions creating a suite of innovations aimed at reducing dental anxiety and enhancing the overall patient experience.

“My vision is simple: to make dental visits as stress-free as possible—for both patients and professionals,” Tiago explains.

As he balances the demands of his final year in dentistry and his entrepreneurial pursuits, Tiago is also seeking funding and partnerships to bring his idea to market.

The Cost of Inaction in Dentistry

Failing to address patient discomfort has broader implications. Studies reveal that dental anxiety contributes to delayed treatments for a significant number of patients (Journal of Dental Research, 2023). This not only impacts oral health outcomes but also adds unnecessary costs for clinics and patients alike.

Tiago’s innovation has the potential to change this by improving the experience of an essential diagnostic tool, making it easier for patients to seek and complete treatment.

Shaping the Future of Dentistry

Tiago Moreira is more than an inventor; he’s a problem-solver with a clear vision for improving dental care. His journey from student to innovator exemplifies the power of determination and the unique advantages of the Nordic innovation ecosystem.

As he says, “The dental industry doesn’t need more tools; it needs better tools that prioritize patient comfort.”

With his eco-friendly, ergonomic sensor holder, Tiago is leading the charge toward a more patient-centered future in dentistry.

How You Can Support Tiago’s Vision

As Tiago develops his prototype, he is actively looking for:

  • Funding: To refine and scale his innovation.

  • Partnerships: Especially with dental clinics and industry experts.

  • Mentorship: Guidance from seasoned entrepreneurs and healthcare professionals.
